Gathering Creative Gold: The Power of Witnessing Your Art | Sam Horton
Mar 09, 2026There is a moment in the creative process that most people rush past.
It’s the moment after the piece is finished.
When the brush is down.
When the page is full.
When something has been brought into form.
And almost instinctively, we move on.
We photograph it.
We judge it.
We share it.
Or we begin thinking about what to create next.
But what if this moment…
this quiet space after creating…
is actually where the deepest part of your creative practice begins?

Podcast Summary
The Part No One Talks About
So much of the conversation around creativity focuses on making.
How to start.
How to stay consistent.
How to improve your skills.
But very little attention is given to what happens after.
In a soulful creative practice, the process doesn’t end when your artwork is complete.
In many ways, that’s when something deeper starts to unfold.
Because your art is not just something you create.
It is something that can speak back to you…
if you are willing to slow down enough to listen.
Why We Rush Past It
Many women I work with feel a quiet pressure in their creative practice.
A pressure to produce.
To keep moving.
To make something good.
To share something worthy.
And so we move quickly from one piece to the next…
without ever truly sitting with what we’ve created.
Sometimes this is habit.
Sometimes it’s the influence of a fast-paced world.
And sometimes… it’s because stillness feels uncomfortable.
Because when we pause, we open the door to something deeper.
Emotion.
Truth.
Awareness.
And not all of it feels neat or easy to hold.
So we keep moving.
But in doing so, we miss the quiet wisdom that only reveals itself with time.
What It Means to Witness Your Art
Witnessing your art is not about analysing it.
It’s not about deciding whether it’s good or bad.
It’s about presence.
It’s about sitting with your work…
without needing to fix it, label it, or understand it straight away.
You might simply look at your piece with a soft gaze.
You might notice what you feel in your body.
You might return to it the next day and see something new.
There is no urgency here.
Only a willingness to stay open.
To allow meaning to arrive in its own timing.
When Symbols Begin to Reveal Themselves
One of the most beautiful aspects of creativity is that we often create from a place that is deeper than conscious thought.
We follow instinct.
We respond to colour, shape, texture, movement.
And in doing so, we allow something honest to emerge.
But we don’t always understand it in the moment.
Later…
sometimes much later…
we begin to see.
A recurring shape.
A colour that reflects an emotional state.
A symbol that carries a message we weren’t ready to hear at the time.
These insights don’t come from forcing meaning.
They come from witnessing.
From giving your work space to breathe…
and trusting that what needs to be revealed will reveal itself.
A Practice of Presence
When you begin to witness your art, something shifts.
Creativity stops being something you perform…
and becomes something you experience.
You slow down.
You soften.
You listen.
And in that space, you reconnect with yourself.
Because witnessing your art is not just about observing what you’ve made.
It is about learning to sit with your own inner world…
with curiosity, rather than judgement.
This is where creativity becomes a spiritual practice.
Not because of what you create…
but because of how you relate to it.
Your Art as a Mirror
Over time, you may begin to notice that your art reflects more than you expected.
Your feelings.
Your patterns.
Your desires.
Your healing.
It becomes a mirror.
Not a harsh one.
Not one that critiques or corrects.
But one that gently reveals.
And when you are willing to witness what you see…
you create space for deeper understanding, compassion, and change.
Where the Wisdom Lives
Creation is powerful.
But creation alone is only part of the process.
Witnessing is where the wisdom lives.
Because it is in the witnessing that we begin to integrate what has been expressed.
It is where insight lands.
Where meaning settles.
Where transformation begins.
Not through force…
but through quiet awareness.
A Gentle Invitation
Choose one piece of art you’ve created recently.
It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It doesn’t need to be finished in a particular way.
Just something that came from you.
Sit with it for a few minutes.
Not to analyse it.
Not to improve it.
Not to judge it.
Just to be with it.
Notice what you feel.
Notice what draws your attention.
Notice what surprises you.
And then, if it feels right, gently ask:
If this artwork could speak… what might it be asking me to notice right now?
There is a quiet kind of magic in this practice.
A soft unfolding.
A deepening of trust.
A return to yourself.
Because sometimes…
your art is not waiting to be improved.
It is waiting to be witnessed.
