Choosing the story that lets you grow

When Niki's mother died suddenly in a car accident, she could have told a purely physical story: a speed differential, a stretch of country road, a heart that gave out. All true. All useless to her.

She could also have told a darker story: that her mother left her, gave up, wasn't strong enough. Also, in some sense, available to her. Also, as she puts it plainly, not beneficial.

Instead, Niki went looking for the version of the story that let her grow. She recognised that her mother's death, terrible as it was, gave her something her mother never had, the space to recalibrate her own relationship with femininity, with self-sacrifice, with what she would and wouldn't accept in a relationship. That's not the same as saying the loss was good. It's saying she chose, deliberately, which thread to pull.

That distinction sits at the centre of everything Niki does creatively. The facts of an experience are fixed. The story you build from them isn't, and that story is what shapes the future you walk into.

The golden thread

Niki has a phrase for the thing worth following: the golden thread. It's usually the thing you're sensing but scared to name, even to yourself. Her advice is blunt and generous at once, find that thread and follow it, because it's the one that brings the growth, the peace, and eventually the joy.

She's equally clear that this isn't only for writers or actors. You can paint a painting and it tells a story. The medium changes; the principle doesn't. What matters is finding the version of your experience that moves you forward rather than the one that keeps you exactly where you are.

Creativity as the release valve

Niki also talks about creativity as a way of admitting something is real. The moment you speak an experience into a story, whether that's a script, a painting, or a conversation with another person, it starts to change. It stops being static and starts becoming something else. That's the transformation she's built her whole practice around, and it's also, in her words, why growth is the most natural state a human being can be in.
